The clarity of a diamond refers to the purity of the stone and the presence of identifying characteristics. These tiny, natural birthmarks occur in the majority of diamonds and are referred to by gemmologists as blemishes or inclusions. The presence of these natural imperfections is like a fingerprint - no two diamonds will have the same.
Diamonds with the least imperfections are graded with the highest clarity grades and as a result are more costly. The clarity of a diamond is measured by the number, size and type of the characteristics. Many of these imperfections are visible only under a microscope with 10x loupe magnification. Diamonds with no visible flaws to the naked eye are commonly referred to as ‘eye clean’ and relate to diamonds with clarity grades from IF to VS. As many of these internal flaws are microscopic they do not affect a diamond’s beauty in any noticeable way.
A diamond doesn’t have to be flawless to look stunning. For impact and beauty consider an eye clean diamond: they are an excellent choice for quality and value. When chosen well, imperfections in a SI quality stone are not always visible to the unaided eye which makes them a great choice for value for money. It’s all about the location of the impurities: an SI clarity stone can offer an expensive look at an affordable price.
